Lahore College for Women University is an independent women's university in Lahore, Pakistan, founded as a women's college in 1922. One of the oldest female institutions of Pakistan, the university has approximately 7,000 students and a teaching faculty of more than 330. It admits students at the intermediate, master's and Ph.D. levels. Established in May 1922 as an intermediate residential college and affiliated with the university of the Punjab, it was housed in a building on Hall Road, Lahore, with a strength of 60 students, 25 of whom were boarders and 13 staff members and then the progress flourished with full boom.

Since the establishment of Lahore College for Women University, in September 2002, the university has tried its level best for improvement in higher education.

As per ranking of general universities, Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) ranks Lahore College for Women University at 15.[1]

Scientific and technological research in all the disciplines of science and technology plays a crucial roles in scientific discoveries. Lahore College for Women University has established a Research Center to provide students with facilities and services for advance research.

Quality enhancement cell

One of the emerging challenges faced by any higher education institution is the development, application and maintenance of quality benchmarks in all its key performance areas. To institutionalize the process of quality sustenance and enhancement, the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) established in the HEC.

In pursuance of the National Action Plan for performance evaluation, assessment and accreditation and quality up gradation of institutions of higher education, a Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) has been established in Lahore College for Women University as a post-accreditation quality sustenance measure.

Since quality enhancement is a continuous process, the QEC is a regular part of the university system and work towards realizing the goals of quality enhancement and sustenance in tune with the Vision and Mission of the university.

The prime task of the QEC is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the performance of the university. The QEC will make a significant and meaningful contribution in the post-accreditation phase. During the post-accreditation period, the QEC will channel the efforts and measures towards academic excellence.

The work of the QEC in the first step is towards the internationalization and institutionalization of quality enhancement. Its success will depend upon the sense of belonging and participation it can inculcate in all the constituents of The University. it is a monitoring, evaluative and assessment unit of The University. The QEC has the potential to become a vehicle for ushering The quality by working out intervention strategies to remove deficiencies and enhance quality.

Libraries

HEC Digital Library

HEC Digital Library is a program to provide researchers at public and private universities in Pakistan and non-profit research and development organizations with access to international scholarly literature based on electronic (online) delivery, providing access to high quality, peer-reviewed journals, databases and articles across a wide range of discipline.

University Library

The main library of the University (Sciences, Computer Science and Arts) stocks many valuable books. Besides books, there are numerous up-to-date magazines and publications as well as national newspapers which are received regularly. Besides the main library there are seminar libraries in all the post-graduate departments.

In order to borrow book students are issued a library card. They can borrow these books for 14 days. Books to different classes are issued in turns on different days of the week. Reference books, magazines and newspapers cannot be issued or taken out of the library. The student will be fined if they keep books for more than the fixed days. Roll Number for final exam will be issued only if the students bring clearance slip from the librarian.

Book bank

There is a book bank maintained by the Social Work Department. Deserving and needy students are provided with textbooks here.

Student activities

To facilitate co-curricular activities and sports, there are student societies and clubs. Presidents and secretaries of these societies are nominated by the teachers. By participating in these activities the students win prizes and thus strengthen the glorious tradition of the university. The Shaukat Ara Niazi Gold Medal is awarded students on the basis of best performance in literary pursuits. Najma Saddique is the faculty member in charge of societies.
